Destination

In the heart of Tuscany, between coastal dunes, Mediterranean pine forests and vast wetlands, the Maremma Park and the Orbetello Lagoon They represent one of the most fascinating places in the Mediterranean for nature photography. Here, light reflects off the shallow waters of the lagoon, creating scenes that change minute by minute, while the reed beds become a silent stage for wildlife.

This is one of the richest areas of Italy in terms of avifauna, especially during the migratory period. Among the salt marshes and shallow waters it is possible to observe sandpipers, turnstones, herons and, with a little attention, even the very rare hermit ibis, one of the most fascinating species in the area. Dawn and dusk often offer extraordinary scenes, with flocks cutting across the sky and colors perfectly reflected on the water.

Biodiversity is not limited to birds: coastal forests and scrubland offer excellent opportunities to encounter foxes, wild boars and roe deer, discreet but frequent protagonists in this ecosystem. During the evening sessions it is not uncommon to hear the activity of the owls, while with a lot of luck the Maremma can surprise you with the most exciting appearance of all: the wolf, an extraordinary presence and symbol of the return of the wildest fauna to our regions.

Walking in the Maremma means entering a landscape that remains untouched, where the sea, the lagoon, and the Mediterranean scrub coexist in an ancestral balance. A place that photography enthusiasts should experience at least once, to immerse themselves in one of the wildest and most evocative corners of Italy.

Learn more about your experience

This workshop is a total immersion in nature photography, designed to let you experience two days in which nature becomes a classroom, inspiration and travel companion.
You will be guided side by side with a professional nature photographer, a profound expert on local fauna and the territory, who will accompany you step by step in interpreting the environment, the light and the animals' behaviour.

From the very first moment you will enter the heart of the photographic process: a engaging theoretical lesson It will introduce you to the fundamental techniques for authentically narrating nature, from the conscious use of light to the basics of ethology useful for predicting wildlife movements.
Immediately after we will move on to practice with field trips, both itinerant and stakeout, to experience the truest nature photography experience. You'll learn to move silently and choose the right spot to create impactful images.

In conclusion, a complete post-production lesson will show you how to bring field-produced images to life: managing light and shadow, reducing noise, blending colors, and creating the kind of atmosphere that transforms a shot into a visual story.

The aim of the workshop is to offer you a complete experience that combines photography, biology and conscious observation, leaving you not only with new technical skills, but with a deeper insight into the natural world.

Scheduled Activities

The workshop activities will be completely dedicated to nature photography, following the rhythms of light and the movements of the animals, thus focusing on the moments of dawn and dusk.

During the itinerant trips and in the wetlands we will focus on the avifauna, looking for species such as pink flamingos, northern bald ibis, long-eared owl and waders (such as turnstones, sandpipers, and sandpipers). Thanks to our knowledge of the area and the species' typical behavior during this season, we will often have the opportunity to find ourselves at excellent photographic distances, capturing shots that narrate wildlife authentically and respectfully.

Alongside the travelling sessions, we will also experience moments of photographic stakeout, designed to discreetly and closely observe the most endangered animals shy and elusive, as deer, roe deer, wild boars, foxes and wolves.
You'll learn how to position yourself, use appropriate camouflage clothing, and interpret environmental cues, from the sounds of the forest to the clues left by animals.
These hours of patience and attention will teach you to manage waiting and to recognize animal behavior, transforming observation into photograph.

Each release is conceived as a complete learning pathYou'll discover how to read the landscape, predict animal movements, choose the best vantage point, and exploit natural light in ever-changing conditions. We'll guide you in creating effective images even in unpredictable situations, managing depth of field at close range, and composing your shots narratively, capturing interactions, behaviors, and moments with visual impact.

There will be a complete post-production lesson, designed to maximize the value of shots obtained in the field. We will analyze together lighting, contrasts, noise management, sharpness and file preparation for print and webIt will also be a time for discussion on the image selection process, how to choose the best shots, and the workflow.

The heart of this workshop is to offer you an experience immersive, educational and exciting, where every activity – from itinerant trips to stakeouts, from theory to post-production – will allow you to learning to read and respect nature, developing photographic skills that will stay with you for a long time. The goal is to transform every encounter with wildlife into unforgettable images, capable of telling the story authentic beauty of Tuscany and its extraordinary fauna.

Detailed plan

Find out how the days will unfold and which activities make up the experience

Day 1 - February 7

The first day of the workshop will begin with the group meeting at the hotel in Maremma, around 9:30–10:00 a.m. After the welcome, there will be an introductory session lasting approximately two hours, during which the two professional photographers will present the basics of nature photography, key techniques for the workshop, composition tips, and advanced approaches. This will be a perfect time to clarify any doubts, ask questions, and align on the goals for the following days.

After a quick lunch, we will immediately set off for the first activity. The initial session will be dedicated to a visit to a winter roost of long-eared owls, a place where these birds of prey gather during the cold months. With a bit of luck, we'll be able to observe and photograph this extremely rare bird, attempting to capture its elegance and camouflage among the branches. It will be a valuable opportunity to work on environmental photography and light management in complex settings.

Once the session dedicated to owls is over, we will move towards a hideout where we will spend the afternoon in camouflage, using ghillie camouflage and ethical observation techniques. Here we'll be able to photograph deer, wild boar, foxes, and other mammals, with the small chance—if extremely lucky—of spotting wolves. The stakeout will continue until dusk, when we'll return to the hotel.

The evening will continue with a session of post-production Lasting approximately an hour and a half, the professional photographer will guide you step by step through the entire workflow: from opening RAW files to managing light, from contrast to color rendering, up to preparing images for web and print. Dinner will follow, a chance to discuss the day, share experiences, and prepare for the next day's activities.

The program is indicative and subject to change based on photographic opportunities, weather conditions, and the presence of animals. The photographers will evaluate any changes, aiming to always offer you the best possible experience.

Day 2 - February 8

The second day will begin before dawn, when we will set off towards the wetlands of the Orbetello Lagoon, one of the most iconic environments in the Maremma. Here we will dedicate ourselves to the search for the pink flamingos, which flock to the lagoon in their thousands during the winter, creating spectacular scenes. The soft, grazing morning light will allow us to work on silhouettes, reflections, and group behavior, taking advantage of one of the most exciting times to photograph these extraordinary birds.

After checking out several strategic points in the lagoon and evaluating the best photographic opportunities—with the possibility of encountering herons, waders, and other species typical of the area—we'll move to the previous day's observation area. Here we'll dedicate ourselves to a session of traveling photography, walking in small groups and maintaining a silent and respectful approach. We will follow the paths that run alongside the areas frequented by deer, wild boars, foxes and other mammals, trying to capture spontaneous and dynamic moments in a completely different context than the static stakeout.

After a break for lunch, we will return to the lagoon area to tackle one of the most anticipated sessions of the workshop: the search for very rare hermit ibis, one of the most fascinating and symbolic species of the Maremma. If we're lucky, we'll have the opportunity to photograph them during their afternoon activities, taking advantage of the gradually warmer and more enveloping light.

We will end the day observing and photographing the waders and the typical birdlife of sunset over the lagoon, a moment when the sky is reflected in the water and every detail becomes poetry. It's the most evocative way to close the workshop, gathering the last shots in the golden evening light.

As always, the program may be subject to change or adaptation based on weather conditions, animal presence, and current photographic opportunities. The photographers' goal will be to guide the group to the best locations, optimizing each session to ensure a rich and complete experience.
