Destination

In the heart of the’Central Apennines, the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park during the winter transforms into a unique, silent and extraordinarily evocative environment. ancient beech forests, the valley floors and the more open valleys can be enveloped by the snow, creating essential, clean and particularly fascinating photographic contexts.

During these months, many species are more active in search of territories, resources, and mates. This is the period in which the Apennine wolf enters the mating phase and can be more present in the valley floor areas, even if it remains an elusive, unpredictable and never guaranteed species.

Abruzzo remains one of the most important places for the conservation of Italian wildlife and its winter landscape is among the most beautiful in our country: deer, Abruzzo chamois, birds of prey, and tracks in the snow they can make every outing a special moment.

Learn more about your experience

This winter workshop includes three days dedicated to the photographic observation of the Apennine fauna, with sessions at valley floor, without long hikes and with well-organized posts. A perfect experience for those who want to dedicate time to photography even in winter, without having to face demanding physical conditions or complex treks.

We will use stakeouts and ghillie camouflage to minimize human perception and increase its naturalness. All accompanied by a professional photographer which will provide ongoing assistance, technical advice, and support on different lighting situations and animal behavior.

The chosen period is one of the most interesting for understanding the dynamics of the wolf in its natural environment, observing any seasonal movements, and capturing the atmospheres that only winter can offer. Amidst snow, soft lighting, footprints in the snow, and clean settings, the workshop aims to showcase Abruzzo's natural beauty in its most essential form.

Photographic Activities

During the days we will alternate silent stakeouts for short journeys by car or on foot along permitted routes, always with a respectful approach.

The goal will be to work on the first light of morning and on sunset colors, taking advantage of the widespread winter conditions and the possible presence of snow. The valley floors offer excellent visibility and often allow you to observe animals without disturbance and in their natural behavior.

It will be possible to experiment with photographic techniques specific to the winter season: the use of soft light, managing whites in the presence of snow, contrasting with light backgrounds and dark subjects, silhouettes, backlighting and narrating the habitat.

The Apennine wolf represents one of the most iconic subjects of Abruzzo: it is not a guaranteed sighting, but this period offers good chance of intercepting their movements. If it were to happen, it would be a photographic experience of great value.

Why winter?

Winter is a special time for photography in Abruzzo: the light is softer, the atmosphere is quieter and, if we're lucky, the presence of snow It can offer even more evocative scenery. Even without snow, however, this season offers a unique charm, made of soft colors, simple environments, and a nature that is more discreet but equally fascinating.

The valley floors facilitate sightings and reduce physical effort, making the workshop also suitable for those who prefer a more comfortable but still authentic and professional photography.

The use of the ghillie camouflage and camouflage techniques will allow us to observe the fauna in the most ethical way possible, without interfering with the environment, with the constant support of the professional photographer who will accompany the group during all sessions.
