Destinazione

This itinerary reveals the extraordinary diversity of Italian nature, from the rocky slopes of the Alps, home to ibex and chamois, to the rolling Apennines where red deer, wolves, and foxes roam among beech forests and timeless valleys.

The Gran Paradiso National Park, Italy’s oldest, welcomes us with spectacular alpine scenery and high-altitude wildlife. In the first light of day, ibex and chamois move gracefully across snow-capped ridges.

Further south, the Monti Sibillini National Park offers a contrasting landscape of plateaus, gorges, and meadows bursting with wildflowers. Between Monte Vettore and the valleys of Castelluccio, we’ll search for foxes, roe deer, and the elusive wolf.

Finally, the Abruzzo National Park, the beating heart of wild Italy, reveals ancient forests, crystal lakes, and mountain villages among Europe’s most untouched ecosystems. Here we’ll look for red deer, Apennine chamois, and, with luck, hear the distant call of the Italian wolf.

Three distinct ecosystems, one continuous photographic story.
An intimate 7-day wildlife photography tour, designed for those who wish to experience nature in its purest form, guided by expert photographers and local specialists.

Scopri di più sulla tua esperienza

This photo safari through Italy’s National Parks offers an immersive and authentic experience for those who wish to capture the wild soul of the Italian mountains.

Each day is organized around sunrise and sunset excursions, the best times to observe animal activity and take advantage of the most evocative light. You will travel in small groups with expert guides and a professional photographer, learning how to interpret animal behavior, read light, and refine your field photography skills.

After the first overnight stay in the heart of the Alps, we will dedicate two full days to exploring the valleys of Gran Paradiso, photographing ibex, marmots, and alpine chamois surrounded by peaks that reach over 3,000 meters.

We will then move south toward the Sibillini Mountains, where the landscapes open into vast plains and deep gorges. Here we will look for foxes, roe deer, and wolves, while the sunsets over the Apennines create dramatic scenes and backlight opportunities.

The last part of our journey will take us to Abruzzo, where autumn colors or spring greens transform the forests into living paintings. Red deer, Apennine chamois, and wild boar populate these valleys, offering incredible chances for wildlife encounters in total tranquility.

A photographic adventure designed for those seeking authenticity, connection with nature, and unforgettable imagesin one of Europe’s most diverse natural regions.

Photographic and Observation Activities

By traveling with Just Explorers, you will experience a journey tailor-made for those who love nature, adventure, and ethical wildlife photography.

Each day will include outdoor activities combining trekking, field observation, and camouflage sessions — designed to let you experience the natural rhythms of wildlife in a completely authentic way. Depending on the area and the season, we will explore alpine ridges, forest trails, and hidden valleys, moving silently and observing from natural hides.

You will be accompanied by two professional local photographers, experts in the fauna of these regions, who will guide you through techniques of field approach, light management, and composition in wild environments.

All outings are designed to maximize photographic opportunities while maintaining total respect for nature and minimizing disturbance. The pace of the days is flexible and centered on the group’s needs — we may spend hours waiting for a wolf to appear at dawn, follow a chamois on a high-altitude ridge, or photograph a deer during the rut in the last light of day.

The trekking routes are of moderate difficulty, with elevation gains that can reach up to 300 meters, and require a minimum level of fitness and good mobility to ensure comfort and safety during the activities.

An experience of quality, patience, and deep connection, where every moment becomes part of a greater story — the untamed spirit of Italy’s mountains.

Our Lodges

During our tour in Italy, we will stay in three carefully selected accommodations, simple yet charming, chosen for their proximity to the parks and their authentic atmosphere.

In the Gran Paradiso area, our base lies in a quiet alpine valley surrounded by forests and mountain peaks. The rooms are comfortable, with private bathrooms and cozy interiors, the ideal place to rest after long days in the field and enjoy local mountain cuisine.

In the Sibillini Mountains, we will stay in the heart of a small Apennine village, close to the main observation areas. Here you’ll experience the warmth of Italian hospitality, with hearty meals and a family-like atmosphere.

Finally, in Abruzzo, we’ll be welcomed in a traditional mountain lodge overlooking a beautiful lake, in the heart of one of the park’s most wildlife-rich areas. The structure offers double or twin rooms, breakfast and dinner included, and a quiet, relaxing setting.

Across all locations, cuisine is based on local and seasonal products, combining comfort and authenticity. The entire organization is designed to let you focus entirely on photography and nature, without distractions.

With Just Explorers, you’ll count on a small group, professional guidance, and complete support before, during, and after your journey.

Programma dettagliato

Scopri come si svolgeranno le giornate e quali attività compongono l’esperienza

Day 1 – November 17: Arrival in Milan and transfer to Gran Paradiso National Park

Arrival in Milan and meeting with the group. After a brief introduction, we will travel towards Gran Paradiso National Park (approx. 2.5 hours).
Along the way, we will stop at a supermarket for any personal purchases or supplies needed for the following days.
Check-in at the hotel in the heart of the Valsavarenche valley, relax, and enjoy a dinner featuring typical dishes of the Aosta Valley.

Day 2 – November 18: Gran Paradiso – Full day (sunrise and sunset sessions)

Early departure for a sunrise session. We will drive to the upper part of the Valsavarenche and begin a short trekking route (approx. 200–300 m elevation gain) in search of Alpine ibex, chamois, and foxes.
With a bit of luck, we may spot golden eagles or even the bearded vulture gliding over the peaks. Rare but possible sightings include stoats, mountain hares, or the elusive wolf.
Return to the lodge in late morning for rest and a light lunch (not included; participants can eat at the hotel or use snacks purchased earlier).
In the afternoon, around 3:00 p.m., we will head to the opposite side of the valley for the sunset session, exploring new areas with different light and backgrounds.

Day 3 – November 19: Gran Paradiso (morning) and transfer to the Sibillini Mountains

Morning photographic session similar to the previous day, followed by check-out and departure towards Monti Sibillini National Park (approx. 8 hours).
Lunch stop en route. Arrival in the late afternoon, check-in, and dinner featuring traditional dishes from the Marche region.

Day 4 – November 20: Full day in Sibillini National Park

Full day dedicated to exploration and photography within Sibillini National Park.
In the morning we will trek into the mountain slopes in search of the Apennine chamois, an endemic Italian species currently in its mating season, offering excellent chances of observation and photography.
The area is also home to red deer, wolves, roe deer, and wild boar.
We’ll spend the entire day in the field, alternating trekking and stationary observation, before returning to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 5 – November 21: Morning in Sibillini and transfer to Abruzzo National Park

Morning session at the base of the Sibillini valleys — a photo safari-style excursion aimed at observing roe deer, red deer, and possibly wolves or foxes.
Afterwards, we will travel south towards Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park (approx. 3 h 45 min).
Lunch stop along the route and a visit to the Park Headquarters, where we will meet with park officials to learn more about local conservation and wildlife monitoring projects.
Check-in and dinner at the lodge.

Day 6 – November 22: Full day in Abruzzo National Park

Early wake-up for a pre-dawn hide session in the valley floor, focused on observing the Italian Apennine wolf, an endemic and highly elusive species.
By this stage of the tour, participants will have already photographed a great diversity of Italian wildlife, and now we dedicate the remaining mornings and evenings to the park’s most secretive inhabitants.
Alongside wolves, this area also hosts red deer, wild boar, foxes, and roe deer.

During central hours of the day, we will move on foot through lowland forests and meadows for itinerant wildlife photography, looking for deer and foxes in the best light.
Activities may involve camouflage clothing (3D ghillie suits) to minimize visibility and disturbance — kits can be purchased locally (€110) or rented (€10, mask and gloves excluded for hygiene reasons).

Breakfast and dinner are included at the lodge; lunch will be flexible and managed independently or with the group depending on the day’s schedule.

Day 7 – November 23: Final session and transfer to Rome

Final morning session in the park — either a last hide session or a mobile trek depending on the photographic results of previous days.
Return for breakfast, check-out, and transfer to Rome Fiumicino Airport, with estimated arrival around 12:00–13:00.

For this photographic tour, we recommend bringing lenses of at least 400–600mm focal length, essential for capturing detailed wildlife portraits and distant subjects such as ibex, chamois, or wolves.

Shorter lenses, such as a 70–200mm or a wide-angle, can also be very useful for environmental shots and landscape photography, especially in the mountain settings of Gran Paradiso, Sibillini, and Abruzzo.

A sturdy tripod is highly recommended — it’s essential for long sessions in hides and for achieving maximum image sharpness during low-light conditions.

If you don’t have all the necessary equipment, don’t worry: cameras, lenses, and tripods can be rented directly through Just Explorers and delivered on site at the start of the tour.

The Italian National Parks Tour takes place in mountain environments, with temperatures that can range from –5°C to +20°C depending on altitude, weather, and time of day.
For this reason, it’s important to dress in layers, so you can easily adapt to changes in temperature during sunrise and sunset sessions.

We recommend:

  • Thermal base layers and a fleece or insulated mid-layer

  • A waterproof and windproof outer shell

  • Comfortable hiking pants and warm socks

  • Waterproof trekking boots with good grip, essential for walking on rocky or damp terrain

  • Hat, gloves, and neck warmer, especially for early mornings and high-altitude areas

  • Headlamp or flashlight for pre-dawn departures and evening sessions

  • Neutral-colored clothing, avoiding bright colors to remain discreet during wildlife observation

  • A durable backpack to carry your camera gear, water, and extra layers during the day

Additional useful items include sunglasses, sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle.

The key is to stay warm, dry, and comfortable, so you can fully enjoy long days outdoors and focus on your photography in every condition.
