Destination

Gran Paradiso National Park spans more than 70,000 hectares of protected alpine wilderness, rising from gentle 800-meter valleys to the 4,061-meter summit of Gran Paradiso itself. Stretching across four spectacular valleys and two Italian regions, it is not only a natural treasure of the Alps but also Italy's oldest national park, founded on December 3rd, 1922, a place where conservation history and wild beauty meet.

This extraordinary protected area is one of the most fascinating wildlife habitats in the Italian Alps. The iconic Alpine ibex, symbol of the park, moves confidently across rocky ridgelines, while chamois, red foxes, mountain hares, stoats and, with luck, even the elusive wolf inhabit its valleys. Above, the sky is ruled by the majestic Golden Eagle and the impressive Bearded Vulture, two of Europe's most powerful and emblematic raptors.

From a wildlife photography perspective, Gran Paradiso is a true alpine sanctuary. Snow-covered peaks, dramatic mountain silhouettes and the soft, crystalline light of winter create conditions of rare visual purity. The combination of accessible wildlife, open alpine terrain and deep seasonal silence transforms the park into a photographer's dream, a wild, immersive environment where every ridge, every track in the snow and every encounter tells a story.

In winter, Gran Paradiso becomes a quiet, suspended world: raw, authentic and intensely beautiful. It is here, in the stillness of the frozen Alps, that wildlife photography turns into something deeper, an experience of movement, patience and connection with nature at its most essential.

Learn more about your experience

This five-day winter wildlife photography workshop in Gran Paradiso National Park is designed as an immersive and intensive experience for photographers who want to elevate their skills in a truly wild alpine environment. Guided by a professional wildlife photographer, participants will explore the park's most scenic and wildlife-rich valleys, moving through forests, open snowfields and mountain ridgelines in search of powerful natural encounters and atmospheric winter landscapes.

Winter transforms the park into an exceptional setting for Alpine wildlife photography. Against a backdrop of snow and silence, participants will have the opportunity to photograph Alpine ibex, chamois, red foxes, mountain hares, Golden Eagles and Bearded Vultures, learning how to read animal behavior and anticipate movement in a dynamic, on-the-move field approach. The workshop combines practical fieldwork with continuous mentoring on camera settings, exposure management in snow, composition techniques and creative storytelling.

Each day follows a complete photographic workflow. Morning and afternoon sessions are fully dedicated to field photography, maximizing the best natural light and wildlife activity. Evenings focus on structured image review and advanced post-production sessions, covering noise reduction, contrast control, color refinement and professional export for both print and web.

Beyond technical growth, this international wildlife photography workshop promotes a deep understanding of ethical field practices, responsible wildlife interaction and alpine awareness, ensuring that participants leave not only with strong images, but with a refined method and a stronger connection to nature photography at its highest level.

Photographic Activities

Photographic sessions take place during the most promising hours of the day, at sunrise and sunset, when alpine light becomes softer and wildlife activity increases. This workshop is centered on authentic wildlife photography, meaning we work in the open environment without hides or artificial setups. Animals are photographed in their natural habitat, as we carefully observe, interpret behavior and approach on foot with patience, respect and ethical awareness.

The approach is immersive but accessible. We walk at a comfortable pace through valleys and open alpine terrain, stopping frequently to scan for movement, read tracks in the snow and position ourselves strategically. The goal is not physical challenge, but learning how to find and photograph wildlife naturally, developing field awareness and real-world experience in a calm and structured way.

Each session combines practical shooting and real-time mentoring. Participants refine exposure management in snowy conditions, autofocus techniques for moving subjects, composition in open alpine landscapes and creative storytelling in wildlife imagery.

During the dedicated post-production session, a complete professional workflow is demonstrated, from file selection and noise reduction to contrast control, color refinement and optimized export for print and web, ensuring every participant gains confidence both in the field and in the digital refinement process.

The purpose of these activities is to deliver a truly field-based wildlife photography experience, rooted in ethics, observation and technique, while remaining balanced, structured and enjoyable for photographers of different fitness levels.

Accommodation & Transfers

During the workshop, participants will stay in a charming alpine hotel strategically located at the entrance of Gran Paradiso National Park, perfectly positioned between the three main valleys where most of our wildlife photography sessions take place. This privileged location allows quick access to snow-covered landscapes, minimizing daily transfers and giving us maximum flexibility to begin at sunrise and return comfortably after sunset.

To make your journey seamless, a group transfer from Milan Airport is included and organized for participants, ensuring a smooth and stress-free arrival in the mountains. From the airport to the heart of the Alps, everything is coordinated so you can focus entirely on the experience.

The hotel reflects the authentic character of a traditional Italian mountain lodge. Surrounded by stone houses and alpine forests, it offers a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, ideal for recovering after immersive days in the field. Warm wooden interiors, cozy common areas and a genuine mountain ambiance create a welcoming setting that enhances the overall workshop experience.

Each morning begins with a generous Italian breakfast, designed to provide the right energy for winter wildlife photography. In the evening, guests enjoy a traditional Italian dinner, prepared with local ingredients and inspired by alpine culinary heritage, offering hearty and comforting dishes that complete the mountain experience.

Lunches are typically organized as packed meals in the field, allowing us to remain outdoors during the most productive photographic hours. Depending on conditions and itinerary, we may also stop at small mountain refuges for a warm meal surrounded by breathtaking alpine panoramas.

Accommodation is provided in Comfortable double rooms with private bathrooms, with single occupancy available upon request and subject to availability. Thanks to its strategic position, authentic mountain style and quality Italian hospitality, the hotel becomes an essential part of this wildlife photography workshop, combining comfort, efficiency and genuine alpine charm.

Detailed plan

Find out how the days will unfold and which activities make up the experience

Day 1 - Gran Paradiso National Park

The workshop begins on Day 1 with a meeting point at Milan Airport in the early afternoon, where the group transfer to Gran Paradiso will depart. For participants who prefer to reach the destination independently, the meeting will take place directly at the hotel between 5:30 PM and 6:00 PM. The exact hotel location and logistical details will be shared in advance.

Once everyone has arrived and settled in, we will begin with an introductory presentation of the workshop, outlining the structure of the days ahead, safety guidelines and the philosophy behind our approach to authentic wildlife photography. This session will focus on the fundamentals of winter wildlife photography in alpine environments, including technical considerations, exposure management on snow, and an overview of the park's ecosystems and key species. It is an important moment to understand the environmental context we will be working in and to align expectations for the days ahead.

The evening continues with a traditional Italian dinner at the hotel, offering the first opportunity to relax, get to know the group and prepare for the field sessions starting the following morning.

Day 2 - Gran Paradiso National Park

Day 2 starts early with breakfast before heading towards the wild and secluded valley of Rhêmes-Notre-Dame. From here we begin a moderate hike that takes us through forests and open alpine terrain, exploring areas where ibex and chamois often grace on the slopes and where foxes and mountain hares leave unmistakable tracks in the snow. As we move deeper into the valley, we keep our eyes on the sky as golden eagles and bearded vultures frequently patrol these ridges. After a packed lunch outdoors, we continue photographing until sunset, taking advantage of the soft winter light before returning to the hotel for another warm and hearty dinner.

Day 3 - Gran Paradiso National Park

On Day 3, we shift our exploration to Valsavarenche, a valley known for its rich biodiversity and excellent chances of observing ibex resting on rocky outcrops, chamois moving across steep snowy slopes, and foxes wandering near tree lines. After breakfast, we set out on another moderate hike designed to offer a variety of photographic opportunities: close-up encounters with ungulates, long-lens shots of raptors in flight, and wide-angle compositions of frozen alpine landscapes. As always, we enjoy a packed lunch in the field and continue photographing until the last light of the day before returning to the hotel for dinner.

Day 4 - Gran Paradiso National Park

Day 4 takes us back towards Cogne for a new hike from the village of Valnontey. This valley is famous for its winter wildlife density and for offering some of the most scenic alpine views in the park. Throughout the day we may encounter ibex resting on sunlit ridges, chamois crossing the open slopes and, with a bit of luck, the white winter coat of the mountain hare or the quick movement of a stoat. After lunch outdoors, we return to one of the previously visited locations, choosing the area that offers the best photographic conditions depending on weather, light and wildlife activity. We conclude the day with another dinner based on local culinary traditions.

Day 5 - Gran Paradiso National Park

The experience concludes on Day 5, beginning with breakfast followed by a comprehensive post-production session. Using the images captured throughout the workshop, we analyze shooting decisions, composition, light management in snowy conditions and advanced editing techniques. This final session is a crucial part of the experience, transforming raw fieldwork into refined, portfolio-ready images suitable for both print and web.

It is also the perfect opportunity to review the species encountered during the week, from the emblematic Alpine ibex and chamois to curious red foxes, elusive ermine, majestic Golden Eagles and Bearded Vultures, and, with a bit of luck, even the thrilling presence of wolves in the winter landscape.

At the end of the session, participants will be transferred back to Milan Airport with the organized group transfer, with an estimated arrival time of approximately 1:00 PM on Day 5, allowing for convenient onward travel arrangements.

By the end of these five days, participants return home not only with a strong portfolio of winter wildlife photography from Gran Paradiso National Park, but also with deeper alpine knowledge, refined technical skills and an unforgettable international photography experience in one of Europe's most extraordinary protected areas.

What if I Prefer to Arrive with My Own Car?

Participants are welcome to reach the workshop location independently if they prefer. The hotel is easily accessible by car, and depending on your country or city of departure, traveling in autonomy may be a convenient and flexible option.

If you choose to arrive with your own vehicle, please contact us in advance and we will provide detailed driving directions and logistical information to help you reach the location smoothly.

For this winter wildlife photography workshop in Gran Paradiso National Park, we recommend a main telephoto lens with at least 300 mm of effective focal length, ideal for photographing ibex, chamois, foxes and alpine birds of prey at a respectful distance.

Shorter focal lengths are still very useful for environmental portraits, wider compositions and alpine landscape photography, especially when wildlife interacts beautifully with the snowy scenery.

If you do not own a long telephoto lens, you can easily rent professional equipment directly from us. We offer a selection of high-end telephoto lenses and premium wildlife gear, suitable for both intermediate and advanced photographers.

You can explore the available rental options here:

Our rental service allows you to travel lighter and test top-level wildlife photography lenses in real field conditions. If you are unsure about the best setup for this workshop, feel free to contact us — we'll be happy to help you choose the most suitable equipment for your style and experience level.

For this winter wildlife photography workshop in the Italian Alps, we strongly recommend dressing in technical layers, allowing you to adapt comfortably to temperatures that may range from –10°C to +15°C depending on altitude, weather and time of day.

Essential items include waterproof hiking boots with good grip, a windproof and waterproof outer shell, thermal base layers, insulating mid-layers, gloves suitable for photography and a warm hat. TO rain cover for your camera to protect your gear from snow. A small ground pad or waterproof mat is extremely useful for low-angle wildlife photography in snowy environments.

Do not forget sunglasses and high-protection sunscreen, as winter light at altitude can be very strong and highly reflective on snow.

For certain areas, snowshoes and trekking poles are strongly recommended to move comfortably on winter terrain. Snowshoe rental can be arranged upon request if needed.

A detailed and updated packing list will be shared closer to the workshop date, based on the most recent weather forecasts and snow conditions.
